Something old, Something new

Being the overly sentimental person I still am and especially was as a teenager, I always felt a little remorseful that I'd never seen or been able try on my mother's wedding gown.  She'd worn her sister's dress, who was married the year previous.  It was a beautiful dress, with a full length veil and I'm sure if my aunt still has it she would be more than happy to let me see it.   But I never have, c'est la vie.

And then one day I got engaged and as plans for my upcoming nuptials materialized I was determined to have my own dress, mostly for the sole purpose that one day my own daughter might be able to try it on.  So I went shopping with my mother and my grandmother for the dress, and I was more than happy to plop down that pretty chunk of change and store it in a box for over 16 years just so one day my future daughter might have the memory I never did.

A little impatient, I had her try on the veil when she was two.

Then this spring, I took Hannah in for her 7th grade check up, and I realized she weighed the same as I did when I got married and that my dress would probably fit her.   Unable to restrain myself, that very evening, I pulled my dress out of the box, wrinkles and all and made her try it on.

That one day was finally here...

So many happy memories tied up in that dress, I couldn't wait to share it with her.
It really needed to be ironed and it was still a little big in the shoulders.

But it was nostalgic in all the right ways and I was able to give my
daughter something I'd always wanted and was never able to have.

Never too much of a good thing led Grandma Hatch
to round up a few more dresses for Hannah to try on.

And great, grandma's Geislers dress....

I would never have guessed that my one day, would lead to three days and three generations of gowns.  What a legacy for her to experience, three dresses, two of which her grandmothers made themselves and then wore when they were also sealed in the Logan Temple.  The scary thing is that it really won't be that many more years and she'll be picking out and wearing her own gown. Maybe when that day comes we'll have been able to convince her to try something else to do with her hair, we love the braid but it does seem a little casual paired with the dresses.
