Just Dance

Way back in the day, when Hyrum was in 4th and 5th grade.  I made him take ballroom dance, it was a very low key studio, once a week practice for an hour with a spring recital. He didn't love it, but didn't hate it either.  Really, he just didn't have any friends in the class which probably played a bigger role than not.

Fast forward to this year, when Allie Thacker called up and asked if he'd sign up for ballroom dance with her.  He didn't want to.  I pushed the issue and signed him up. Midway through the term. He wasn't thrilled with that, but nervously went along, it was only twice a week for two hours.

Six weeks later they have their first competition and I'm all like... competition? In Orem?

Oh, the unknown.

Practices hours were bumped up.
Doubling and almost tripling the original time commitment.

And off we go...before the sun rose Saturday morning.

So official with a number pinned to your back.

This was a whole new experience for us, think Strictly Ballroom... Utah mormon style.

Allie's mom, Emmalee and I had a fun, long, long, looooong day shouting out their numbers and cheering our kids on and they didn't even get to dance together, not once.

But would be you believe Hyrum got call backs three times?
And his swing partner, Kate and him placed 4th out of about 60 couples, dancing one age division up!  Not too shabby for a kid only doing this for six weeks!

His team dressed for their "Sweet Like Cola" routine.

We could have cut out shortly after seven, but oh, how he and Allie insisted we stay to the bitter end...hours later...couldn't miss the festive balloon drop, now could we?

  1. Ballroom seems like a great fit for Hyrum! I'm glad you pushed it. I hope he continues to enjoy it.
