Escalante

We'd booked a Air B-n-B and were all excited to explore Escalante over Spring Break.
Then our booking was randomly canceled (and everything else had no vacancy)
and I worried 30 degrees was just a little too cold to go camping.
But then it started to warm up and after wavering
we took a chance and decided to dress warm and hope for the best.

So glad we did.
We arrived just in time to snag the last available campsite
at the Lower Calf Falls Recreation area.
After setting up camp we took off for the Falls.

The hike was sandy and it was all we could do to keep Gavin from going barefoot.
It was a good hike to stretch our legs after the long drive.

The next day we headed out on a long, I mean really long washboard road
to find the famed peek-a-boo and spooky slot canyons.

And they did not disappoint!

It was tricky getting Watson up the entrance (after we found the entrance which was not as clear as it ought to have been).  It was a little steep but we made it.

and enjoyed the magic of the beautiful undulating canyons.

Just stunning and thrilling to be there!

We stopped for a late lunch at Devil's Garden but sadly forgot to take pictures
and we also should've planned to stay longer. The boys wanted to explore more. I was anxious to get into Escante proper to stop at the visitor's center before it closed, but alas, it closed before we arrived (I should've checked their hours better) so we settled for ice cream at the park.

The next morning we packed our campsite

and headed off to the Anasazi Village.
It was small but interesting.
We couldn't take Watson in, so we kind of tag- teamed it.

After the village we stopped for lunch at another
slot canyon known for its amazing acoustics:
Singing Canary Canyon.

It took us a minute to convince the kids to start singing.
But once we finally got them started, we couldn't get them to stop!

And then it was home again, home again, jig-i-ty jig.
